Rebuilding the Wall

I have mentioned that I am reading four parts of the Bible at once.

This week it's been very interesting to read about the Isrealites building the tabernacle and commissioning the very first priests in the desert; Nehemiah rebuilding the wall with the remnant; Isaiah, in between these two times, telling about the good, bad and the coming Messiah; and Jesus in Luke, telling parables, healing people and raising the dead.

I have always loved Nehemiah, so reading it in parallel with these other parts of history is particularly touching. He's rebuilding something that doesn't yet exist for the ones in the desert, and that everybody's taking for granted in the time of Isaiah.

The image of the people rebuilding the wall with one hand and holding a sword with the other...that stays with me.
